映画館へ足を運んだのは何年振りだろうか、覚えてないくらい久しぶりに、大画面大音響で映画を鑑賞した。やっぱり映画は劇場で観るのが一番良い。観たのはアメリカ海軍の戦闘機を操るパイロットたちの活躍を描いた「マーヴェリック」。私が若い頃に大ヒットした「トップガン」という映画の続編になるのだが、前作が1986年の制作と言うことで、単純な“続き”にはならない。主人公をはじめ前作に出演した俳優陣が何人か登場しているのだが、当然歳を取っているし、ある意味ではもう“一人”の主役である「戦闘機」の性能もまさに飛躍的に向上しているので、パート2ではなく“別物”と言えないこともないかと思う。その上、撮影・編集技術等、映画の作り手の方の技術も格段に進歩していて、単体としても、前作を知らない年代の方たちにも楽しめる仕上がりになっているのではないだろうか。
前作「トップガン」は私が一番好きな映画だ。DVDを購入して、何度観たか数えていない。字幕を消して英語の勉強に役立てたりもした。カリフォルニアの熱い太陽、大空を滑空するF-14、白いTシャツ、バイク、ボマージャケット、白い砂浜、鍛えられた肉体、愛、友情、勇気、ライバル、親友の死、そして敵国との命を懸けたドッグファイト。どのシーンを切り取っても私のお気に入りだ。特に最後の空中戦闘シーンはそこだけ繰り返して何度も観た。余りのカッコよさに私はトップガンの虜になっていた。
「続編」というのは、制作してもちろん大成功する場合がある。パッと思いつくところで、「ロッキー2」や「ターミネーター2」はむしろ続編の方がヒットし評価された例だと思う。しかしパート2は“コケる”ことが多いことも確かだ。
私の大好きな英語の一つに「インディペンデンスデー」がある。本当に素晴らしかった。SF好きの私を存分に楽しませてくれた超大作だと思っている。しかしこの続編が大コケした。コケたどころか、私はこの続編のせいであの素晴らしい前作までが汚されたような気分にさえなっている。「インディペンデンスデー2」は絶対に作らなかったほうが良かった。「マーヴェリック」が劇場公開されていたことは知っていたが、この二の舞になってしまうのではないかと恐れて、しばらく観に行けなかったというのが本当のところだ。
だがしかし、その心配は無用だった。「マーヴェリック」では、戦闘機などの最新技術をリアルに表現しつつ、懐かしいシーンを現代とオーバーラップさせるような演出が目立ち、制作たちは我々オールドファンの憧れの気持ちを上手にすっかり汲み取ってくれたと感じている。嬉しかった。
主人公は歳を取ってもパイロットとして相変わらずカッコ良かったが、それだけでなく、ストーリーの中でもちゃんと歳を取らせて、若い世代を支える役割も熱く担っていた。本当に凄い役者さんでありプロデューサーだと思う。四半世紀を超えてなお、彼はまた私をあの頃と変わらず虜にしてくれた。この日ばかりは本当に彼に感謝した。彼のお陰で忘れていた私の青春の何かを思い出したし、淀川長治さん宜しく、映画って本当に良いものだな～と思えた。やっぱり映画制作に携わる仕事がしてみたかったな～と、久しぶりに悔しい思いにも駆られた。

Maverick
I went to the movie theater for the first time in a long time and watched a movie with a big screen and loud sound. I think it is best to see a movie in a theater. The movie I saw was “Maverick,” about the exploits of U.S. Navy fighter pilots. It is a sequel to the movie “Top Gun,” which was a big hit when I was young, but since the first movie was made in 1986, it is not a simple “continuation. The main character and some of the actors who appeared in the previous film appear in this one, but they are older and the performance of the “fighter” who is in a sense the other main “character” has improved dramatically, so I think it is possible to say that this is not a part 2, but a “different” film. In addition, the filmmakers’ skills in filming, editing, etc. have also improved dramatically, and I think that this film, as a stand-alone movie, can be enjoyed by people of all ages who are unfamiliar with the previous film.
The previous film, “Top Gun,” is my favorite movie of all time; I bought the DVD and have not counted how many times I have watched it. I even turned off the subtitles to help me study English. The hot California sun, the F-14s gliding through the sky, the white T-shirts, the motorcycles, the bomber jackets, the white beaches, the athletic bodies, love, friendship, courage, rivalry, the death of a good friend, and the dogfights for life with the enemy. Every scene is my favorite. Especially the last aerial battle scene, which I watched over and over again. It was so cool that I was captivated by Top Gun.
Sequels, of course, can be very successful when they are produced. Rocky 2″ and “Terminator 2” are two examples that come to mind. However, it is also true that part two is often a “fluke.
One of my favorite movies is “Independence Day”. It was really great, and I consider it a blockbuster film that thoroughly entertained me as a sci-fi lover. But this sequel was a flop. Not only did it flop, but I even feel as if this sequel has tarnished its wonderful predecessor. Independence Day 2 should never have been made. The truth is that I knew “Maverick” had been in theaters, but I had not been able to go see it for a while, fearing it would be a repeat of that film.
However, my fears were not to be. Maverick” realistically depicted the latest technology, such as fighter planes, while at the same time overlapping nostalgic scenes with the present day. I feel that the production team has skillfully and completely captured the longing of us old fans. I was happy.
The main character was as cool as ever as a pilot even as he got older, but he also played the role of supporting the younger generation in the story. I think he is a really great actor and producer. Even after a quarter of a century, he still captivated me as he did back then. On this day alone, I was truly grateful to him. Thanks to him, I remembered something of my youth that I had forgotten, and like Mr. Nagaharu Yodogawa, I felt that movies are really good. I also felt a sense of regret for the first time in a long time, thinking that I would have liked to work in film production.
