[Independence from Parents]

Independence from Parents

Perhaps it was because I was basically obedient to what I was taught, but when I was a child, the one-year age difference was huge: I had absolute power over my sister, who was two years younger than me, and even in elementary school, the older students felt much older than me, even though we were only one grade apart. Once I entered junior high school, the difference was obvious. The third graders I looked up to from the first graders were “adults” to me, to the point that I hesitated to even talk to them.
As I grew up, my perception of the age difference gradually fell away, and by the time I became an adult, I had the feeling that “what’s the big deal about being an adult? I came to think that while I had respect for older people, it was important to look at their “personality” and not be fooled by their age or background.

I was born when my parents were 24 years old, which means they are 24 years older than me. In addition to being that much older than me, they are my “parents,” so I felt a great distance between them as objects of respect. However, I feel that this “gap” between my parents and me has finally faded away recently. I think I have finally come to see my parents as human beings. I wonder if the “separation” from my parents is finally complete at my age.

Therefore, the 24-year age difference has become a kind of “reference” standard for me. It is probably not a good idea to ask someone’s age, but if I happen to find out the age of the person I am talking to and the difference is about 24 years old, it is easier for me to gauge the distance between the person and me. It is easier for me to understand the content of a conversation with someone who is 24 years older than me. As I listen to the conversation, I sometimes think about my parents’ life in the past, wondering “What would my parents have done? For some reason, the number “24” has a strange connection with me.
What if it were someone 24 years younger than me? In other words, I would be in the position of the parents, and the age difference would be like talking to my own children. If you’re a child, say 24 years younger than me, you’re already an adult enough, and I would not be able to “treat” him like a child. I may have more to learn from a young person in terms of new skills and knowledge. So, I should just talk to other adults without worrying about their age, but the number “24” is a bit of a drag, and my parents’ presence interferes with me like a flashback.

I wonder if there are too many “rules” in my mind that prevent me from thinking freely and engaging in such activities. I don’t know how to call them “rules,” but I would call them “ingrained habits. I am not consciously using it, but it is a “sense of discrimination” against younger people that binds me firmly.
In any case, I don’t want to ruin the chance I have to meet other people with unnecessary preconceptions. I want to build and nurture as many bonds as possible with an innocent heart that is not bound by anything. That is what I really want to aim for, and I believe that peace lies beyond that.

The world is not that easy to divide by “24.
