[The Final Battle is Tomorrow]

 今日は観終わったばかりの、野球のWBC(ワールドベースボールクラシック)の感想を書くことにする。

The Final Battle is Tomorrow

Today I will write about my impressions of the World Baseball Classic (WBC), which I just finished watching. It is a tournament in which teams are divided by country of origin and try to decide who is the best baseball team in the world. I love sports, and baseball in particular is a sport that I worked hard at as an athlete when I was a small child, so I have a strong emotional attachment to the baseball. However, I rarely watch professional baseball on TV these days, and I only watch digests of Shohei Ohtani, who is playing in the United States. The game I watched on TV today actually took four hours to complete, which is too long. It is difficult to watch the whole game unless you have a lot of time on your hands or you are preparing for it. That would leave me no time to write this blog.
Today’s match was an important opportunity for the Japanese national team to advance to the finals for the first time in 14 years, and I was able to watch the whole match because it was so close and the action was so thrilling. The fact that a loss would mean the end of the tournament made the players more serious, and the matches became more serious. I was so drawn to the game that it seemed like four hours had flown by in the blink of an eye, whereas I usually get bored after a long game.

The game began with Mexico taking the lead with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. Japan had runners on base every inning, but could not score any more runs. By the end of the sixth inning, The Japanese team was in an inferior position, behind by three scores as it was.
I watched the game and thought to myself, “Oh, no, I knew that Mexico is strong. I didn’t know what I was afraid of, but I felt as if it would be my fault if the Japanese national team lost, and I was already looking for excuses for losing. Needless to say, I was not responsible for Japan’s loss. Yet somehow I found myself imagining what would happen after Japan lost, and I felt as if I were consoling and encouraging myself. That had never happened to me before.

Then in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Japan’s Yoshida hit a tying three-run shot, I pounded the floor with glee. Conversely, I was depressed again when the Mexican team added another run in the top of the eighth inning. Although it was my own feelings, from a third-party point of view, I felt a little self-doubt, wondering, “What is wrong with me?.
When I cheer for the Japanese national soccer team at the World Cup, I can watch the games with the feeling that I will never give up on the potential of the Japanese players and continue to fight with them until the end. I really don’t know why, and I feel sorry for the athletes I couldn’t believe in them today. I even feel self-loathing. It may be too cool to say that I was really worried about them, but I am cheering for them as if they were my own.

Tomorrow, the Japanese team will have the world’s best stage to play on, having won a historic victory with a miraculous comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. I hope that the Japanese team will go all out against the U.S. team, even though they are completely away from their opponents, the venue, and the crowd. We have nothing to lose if we have come this far. I want us to surprise the world. Tomorrow, no matter what happens, I will believe in the Samurai team until the very end.

I wish the best of luck to Samurai Japan!
