日本の人口が減少しているそうだ。高齢化社会が進むと年金制度がどうだとかこうだとか、難しい話は私には良く分からない。そういうシステム的なことではなく、私は日本人が少なくなってきているという事実に、ただただ寂しい思いがする。
　年配の方々が天寿を全うして、亡くなっていくことは防ぎようがない。自然の摂理であろう。私は出生率がどんどん低くなってきていることが耐えられない。若い層での自殺者も多い。このままでは日本という国そのものが消滅してしまうのではないだろうか。

　日本の人口は2023年現在で、1億2,330万人。長期的な予測によると、2050年に9,515万人、その50年後の2100年には4,771万人にまで減るだろうという事。明治維新以降、劇的に増え続けてきた日本の人口は、2004年をピークに今度は急激に減っていき、3,330万人だった明治維新時（1868年）の人口に近づこうとしているように見える。この流れは止められないのだろうか。或いはこれで良いのだろうか。
　一方で世界の人口は今も順調に増え続け、現在の約80億人が2050年には97億人にまで伸びるだろうと予測がされている。発展途上国を中心に人口は増え続け、それと共に環境や貧困、食糧不足、エネルギー等々の問題が深刻化している。単純に人口が増えれば良いというものでもないのだろう。

　ではどうしたらいいのだろう。とにかく私は日本人が少なくなることが嫌だ。何とかして若い人たちが子供をもつ未来に夢を持てるような社会にしていかなければならないと思う。
　しかしそれはあまりにも巨大で、私一人で答えを見つけたり探ったりできるような規模の問題ではないように思う。たった一人でも問題提起し続けていく必要があるとは思うが、早期の実効性を重視するとき、そのやり方では恐らく機能しないと思う。問題解決へ向けたビジョンがあり、実行する腕力のある人でないと、できることではないのではないか。

　随分前にテレビ番組を観ていると、とある外国人が日本の伝統文化に興味を持ち来日し、修業している姿が映し出されていた。彼は憧れるままに日本人の師匠から指導を受けて修業を重ね、その技術を継承していこうとしていた。
　私はその外国人を極めて日本人的な人だと思って感激した。技術だけでなく、現代の私たち日本人が忘れている、“わびさび”なのか、何か神聖な感じがする精神をも受け継いでいるような印象を受けた。ある意味で彼は日本人よりも日本人らしくて、素晴らしい人だと思った。
　この番組を観て思ったことは、私が愛して止まない日本人は、日本で生まれ育った人でなければならないということは無いんじゃないかという事。或いは、日本人同士の親から生まれた人じゃなくても構わないと思う事。うまく表現できないが、その人が、私が考える日本人の心をもっているのであれば、人種や出自を問わず、私はその人を日本人だと思える。
　あくまでも私の個人的な考えだが、爆発的に世界人口が増え続ける潮流の中で、もっと外国人が日本に入ってきやすいように、本当の意味での門戸を開いていくことを、日本の未来への選択肢の一つとして考えてもいいと思う。

National Isolation

　I hear that Japan’s population is declining. I don’t really understand all the complicated talk about how the aging society is going to affect the pension system and so on. I am not concerned about such systemic issues, but I am simply saddened by the fact that the number of Japanese people is decreasing.
　There is no way to prevent the elderly from living out their natural lives and passing away. It is the natural order of things. I cannot bear the fact that the birth rate is getting lower and lower. There are many suicides among the younger generation. If this trend continues, Japan itself will probably disappear.

　Japan’s population is 123.3 million as of 2023. According to long-term projections, the population will be 95.15 million in 2050 and 47.71 million in 2100, 50 years after that. Japan’s population, which has been increasing dramatically since the Meiji Restoration, peaked in 2004 and is now rapidly declining, and appears to be approaching the population at the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868), which was 33.3 million. Can this trend be stopped? Or is this the right thing to do?
　On the other hand, the world’s population continues to grow steadily, and it is predicted that the current population of about 8 billion will grow to 9.7 billion by 2050. Population continues to grow, especially in developing countries, and along with it, problems related to the environment, poverty, food shortages, energy, etc. are becoming more serious. It may not be a simple matter of simply increasing the population.

　So what should we do? Anyway, I do not want the number of Japanese to decrease. I think we must somehow create a society where young people can dream of a future where they can have children.
　But it is so huge that I don’t think it is a problem of such a scale that I alone can find or explore the answer. I think it is necessary to continue to raise the issue, even if it is only one person, but I think that approach will probably not work when the focus is on early effectiveness. It is something that can only be done by someone who has the vision to solve the problem and the strength to carry it out.

　While watching a TV program a long time ago, I saw a foreigner who was interested in traditional Japanese culture and came to Japan to practice. He was training under the guidance of a Japanese master and trying to pass on his skills as he yearned to do.
　I was thrilled to see that foreigner as an extremely Japanese person. I had the impression that he had inherited not only the technique, but also the spirit of “wabi-sabi,” or something sacred that we Japanese have forgotten. In a sense, I thought he was more Japanese than Japanese, and a wonderful person.
　Watching this program made me think that the Japanese people I love so much do not necessarily have to be born and raised in Japan. Or, it does not matter if the person is not born of Japanese parents. I can’t express it well, but if the person has what I consider the heart of a Japanese person, then I can consider that person Japanese.
　This is just my personal opinion, but I think that in the trend of the explosive increase of the world population, we should consider opening the door in a real sense so that more foreigners can easily come to Japan as one of the options for the future of Japan.
