人間には様々な欲望があって、私の場合は金持ちになりたいとか、女の子にモテたいとか、美味しいものを食べたいなど、今でもそうだが特に若い頃はもっと露骨に求めていたように思う。それらの欲望が過剰なまでに高まってしまうと、いろいろ問題が出てくる。人によっては犯罪に手を染めてしまうような人も出てくるだろう。
　いわゆるまともな常識を学んで大人に成長した人たちは、欲望のコントロールの仕方を習得している人たち、と言えるのかもしれない。自分の欲望を抑えながら、ある程度は満たしつつ、社会に適合して自分の生活を形あるものにしていく。

　紛争や政治的な問題で人々が苦しい生活を強いられている発展途上国などに赴き、支援活動をしている人たちを私は尊敬している。そういう方たちが現地で実際にどんな生活をしているのかは分からないが、貧しく抑圧された暮らしに苦しんでいる現地の人々の前で、自分たちだけが豊かな暮らしをできるはずはないと信じている。加えて文化や言語、気候等も全く異なる異国で、恐らく不自由な思いをすることは少なくないだろう。
　自分の国で働いていれば、もしかしたらお金持ちにもなれたかもしれないし、美味しいものもたくさん食べられるような生活ができたかもしれない。そういう欲望というか、言わば「邪念」に惑わされることなく、敢えて不自由な世界に飛び込んでいく人たち。「苦しんでいる人たちを助けたい」とか、「世界の平和に貢献したい」などという、尊い信念に裏付けされた勇気ある行動を取れる活動家たちは称賛に値する。素晴らしいと思う。

　我々の同胞であるたくさんの日本人が、そういった国際支援活動に参加し、或いは先導している事実は、心から誇らしく思う。若い日本人たちが目指すべき姿は、私は彼らにあると思う。きっと彼らは外国語にも精通していて、信念も固く、素晴らしい人格を備えた人が多いのだろう。勉強もしていると思う。
　そういう他人を思いやる優しい気持ちの持ち主で、優れた能力のある人たちが、「日本」という看板を背負って、困っている国々を助けに行ってくれる。それもただ大変なだけではなく、テロや内戦など、時には銃弾が飛びかう中に晒され、命の危険が伴うリスクの高い仕事になる。「凄い」の一言しか本当に出て来ない。

　私が日本のことを誇りに思えるのは、海外支援活動家の彼らがいてくれるからだ。人間や企業にも様々な欲望や野望があって、そこを満たすことが一つ大事な目標であることは知っている。しかしそこを何とかコントロールして、困っている人のために命を懸けられる人間・団体は、私は宝だと思う。
　世界的な戦争への機運が高まろうとする中で、有無を言わさず、まず軍備増強に手を打った日本政府の方針に、開いた口が塞がらない。偉い人たちが見習うべき良いお手本も、まさに彼らの姿にあると思う。彼らのお陰で、世界の人たちから日本がどんなに尊敬されているか、学んで欲しい。

　ホントにお金には換えられない仕事だよ

Overseas Support Activities

　Human beings have various desires. In my case, I want to be rich, to be popular with girls, to eat delicious food, etc. I think I was seeking these desires more explicitly when I was younger, especially as I still do now. When those desires become excessive, various problems arise. Some people may even turn to crime.
　Those who have grown up to be adults by learning so-called decent common sense may be those who have mastered how to control their desires. They are able to conform to society and shape their own lives while suppressing their own desires and satisfying them to some extent.

　I respect people who go to developing countries and other places where people are forced to live in hardship due to conflicts and political problems, and engage in relief activities. I do not know what kind of life these people are actually leading there, but I believe that it is impossible for them to live a rich life in front of the local people who are suffering from poverty and oppression. In addition, they will probably experience many inconveniences in a foreign country with a completely different culture, language, climate, etc.
　If they had worked in their own country, perhaps they could have become rich and had a life with many delicious foods. People who dare to dive into the inconvenient world without being misled by such desires, or “evil thoughts,” so to speak. I admire activists who take courageous actions backed by their noble beliefs, such as “I want to help those who are suffering” or “I want to contribute to world peace. I think it is wonderful.

　I am proud of the fact that so many of our fellow Japanese are participating in and leading such international support activities. I think they are what young Japanese should aspire to be. I am sure that many of them are well versed in foreign languages, have firm convictions, and have great personalities. I think they also study hard.
　These people, who are kind and considerate of others and have excellent abilities, will go to help countries in need, carrying the signboard “Japan” on their backs. It is not only hard work, but it is also a high-risk job, sometimes exposed to terrorism, civil wars, or other situations where bullets fly and lives are at risk. The only word that really comes to mind is “amazing.”

　I am proud of Japan because of these overseas aid workers. I know that people and companies have various desires and ambitions, and one important goal is to satisfy them. However, I believe that people and organizations that manage to control them and put their lives on the line for those in need are a treasure.
　As the global momentum toward war is about to build, I cannot help but open my mouth at the Japanese government’s policy of first taking steps, with or without saying so, to build up its armed forces. I think they are also a good example for the high official people to follow. I hope they learn how much respect Japan is held in by people around the world thanks to them.

　It’s really a job that can’t be replaced by money.
