世の中には「流行」というものがあって、何かが人々の人気を集めては忘れられていくという周期が、時代を問わず繰り返されているようだ。それは人、モノ、音楽、言葉等々、あらゆるものが対象になり得る。次から次へと流行が生み出され、いつしかそれぞれが廃れていく。
　それは永遠かと思われるほどに繰り返しなされてきた。ものによっては流行が何年にもわたって続くことがあれば、数日で終わってしまうようなものもある。遅かれ早かれ廃れてしまうものを「流行」と呼ぶのかもしれない。

　私は個人的に、そういったいわゆる“流行りに乗る”ことが好きではなく、特に日本の芸能界の動きに疎い。本当は世の中のどんな事象にでも目を光らせて、「何が今、人々の心を捕らえているのか」等の現象を、注意深く観察していく必要があるとは思う。しかし私にも生理的に触りたくない分野があって、若くて可愛らしいという理由だけで、子供たちが集団で踊りながら歌を歌っているシーンを観ようという気持ちにはどうしてもなれない。それも一つの勉強だとは思うのだが……。

　本のベストセラーというものがある。これも厳密に言えば「流行」の分類に入ることなのだろうが、本と言う媒体は一度流行ると、熱狂的な人気ではないにしろ、比較的長い時間低空飛行で流行が保たれるような気がする。「永く残る」という文字の性質がそうさせるのかもしれない。もちろん中には、私に言わせればナンセンスな内容のものもあるが、多くの人々が読んでいるという事実は、やはり世相を反映している部分をその本が含んでいるという事だと思う。時代を掴むためには、そういった方面での知識の獲得も求められるだろう。社会の今を知ることは、自分を知るためにも必要なことだと思う。
　人類史上最古で最大のベストセラーと言われている「聖書」。「流行り物は読むべきだ」という前述の私の理論が正しいならば、聖書はいの一番に読まなければならない書物という事になる。何故なら人類が一番読んだ本なのだから。

　しかし実際に私は、聖書の完読に成功しているわけではない。新約聖書の特に福音書は何度も読んでいるが、旧約聖書に関しては全編を読むことができていない。正直、旧約聖書は私には難しくて、理解できない部分が多く、読んでいて飽きてしまう。キリスト教では、新約と旧約を二つ併せてはじめて「聖書」とするところなので、どちらか片方では、それは「聖書を読んだ」とは言えないのだ。
　その辺が私の甘さなのだと思う。クリスチャンになりたいと言っておきながら、教会へ継続して通えていないこともそうだし、もう一歩踏み込んでしっかりキリスト教と向き合うことができない。キリスト教のことに限らず、自分でやろうと思ったことから逃げずに、一つ一つ向き合って、弱い自分と闘っていきたい。そうするには今の私には覚悟が足りないし、それにもっと大切な何かが足りていないような気がする。

Mankind and I

　There is such a thing as a “fad” in the world, and the cycle of something becoming popular and then being forgotten seems to repeat itself throughout the ages. People, things, music, words, etc., can be the target of these fads. One fad after another is created, and each one eventually goes out of style.
　It has been repeated so often that it seems like an eternity. Some fads can last for years, while others are over in a matter of days. What goes out of fashion sooner or later may be called a “fad.

　Personally, I do not like to “follow fads,” and I am particularly unfamiliar with what is going on in the Japanese entertainment industry. In fact, I think it is necessary to keep a close eye on any event in the world and carefully observe phenomena such as “what is capturing people’s hearts and minds at the moment. However, there are areas that I physiologically do not want to touch, and I cannot bring myself to watch a scene of children dancing and singing in a group just because they are young and cute. I guess that’s one thing I’m learning. ……

　There is such a thing as a book bestseller. Strictly speaking, this too may be classified as a “fad,” but I feel that once a book becomes a fad, it stays a fad for a relatively long time in the low-hanging fruit, even if it is not a frenzy. This may be due to the nature of the characters, which are “long-lasting. Of course, some of them are nonsense in my opinion, but the fact that many people are reading them indicates that the books contain some aspects that reflect the current situation of the times. In order to grasp the times, it will be necessary to acquire knowledge in such areas. Knowing the current state of society is necessary to know oneself.
　The Bible is said to be the oldest and greatest bestseller in human history. If my theory that “one should read what is popular” is correct, then the Bible is the book that one should read first and foremost. Because it is the most read book of mankind.

　In reality, however, I have not succeeded in reading the Bible in its entirety. I have read the New Testament many times, especially the Gospels, but I have not been able to read the entire Old Testament. Frankly, the Old Testament is too difficult for me to understand and I get bored reading it. In Christianity, the New Testament and the Old Testament together are called the “Bible,” so I cannot say that I have read the Bible if I have read only one of them.
　I think I am naive in this area. It is the same with the fact that I have said that I want to become a Christian, but I have not been able to attend church continuously, and I have not been able to take another step forward and face Christianity firmly. I want to face each thing one by one and fight against my weakness without running away from what I decided to do, not only about Christianity. To do so, I don’t feel I am prepared enough right now, and I feel like I am missing something more important than that.
