一日に届くいわゆる迷惑メールは優に20件を超す。それでも最近は少なくなってきた方かもしれない。契約したことがない大手クレジットカード会社やJRのチケット予約センターを装ったものなど、思わずクリックしてしまいそうな信憑性のあるメール内容を送り付けてくる。どこで私のメールアドレスを入手したのか分からないが、もうずっと長い期間そういうメールが届いてきたので、すっかり慣れてしまった。少ない時は反対に違和感を覚えるほどだ。

　そういったSNSや電話、インターネットを介した、いわゆる詐欺グループが存在するわけだが、私から見ると相当頭が良い人たちが仕組んでいるように見える。誘い入れるための文章内容をはじめ、騙された人を陥れていく手口やシステムの構築などは目を見張るものがある。人間の心理や恐怖感などを巧みに操り、搾取していくやり方は非常に入念に研究されている。周到に用意して、そしてそれを他人にやらせているところがまた凄い。私がそういう詐欺グループを称賛しているように受け取られては困るが、悪い意味で、才能がある人たちがやっているのだと思う。

　単純に、どうしてそんなに頭の良い人たちが、犯罪に手を染めてしまうのだろうかと疑問に思う。そんなにいろいろできるのなら、その能力をもっと別な良い方向に使うことは考えなかったのだろうか。ありきたりな考え方かもしれないが、例えば私なんかよりも確実に優れた能力を有しながら、それを盗んだり騙したりすることにしか使えない状況に甘んじていて、悔しくないのだろうか。
　「他人を欺く」という行為に、無上の喜びを感じる人がいるのかもしれない。彼らは捕まるかもしれないというスリルがないと興奮できず、力を発揮できないのかもしれない。「楽して稼ぐことが全て」の人もいることだろう。そんな私がまだ出会っていない、私の理解を超えたような心の持ち主は、世の中にきっとまだ多数いることだろう。人間の多様性は尊重しつつ、しかしやはり「正義」という概念は、世界中でもっとしっかり共有するべきだと私は思う。

　また「考えが甘い」と誰かから、からかわれてしまいそうだが、私は「正直者がバカを見る」ような世の中は良くないと思う。笑い飛ばせる程度であれば、“世渡り上手”が多少の得をするのは構わない。世渡り上手も能力の一つだろう。しかし度を超えた犯罪行為には断固とした対応が求められると思う。
　セキュリティソフトを入れるなりしていても、何年にも渡って大量の迷惑メールが毎日届く。この状況が野放しにされている事実を前に、現代の生活に潜む強い危険性を感じる。私はまだインターネット等に明るい方なので、それほど困っているわけではないが、年輩の方たちは自分たちを守る術が分からないだろう。公の早急な対応を求めたい。

Change of Course

　The number of so-called “junk mail” I receive per day is well over 20. Even so, the number of such e-mails may be decreasing these days. They send me credible e-mails that I might click on, such as those pretending to be from a major credit card company or a JR ticket reservation center, which I have never signed up for. I don’t know where they got my e-mail address, but I have been receiving such e-mails for a long time now, and I have become completely used to them. When they are few and far between, I feel a sense of discomfort.

　There are so-called scam groups via social networking sites, telephone, and the Internet, and from my point of view, they seem to be set up by some very smart people. The content of the text used to lure people in, the methods used to trick them, and the construction of the system are remarkable. The way they manipulate and exploit people’s psychology and sense of fear is very carefully studied. The fact that they are so carefully prepared and then have other people do it for them is also amazing. I don’t want this to come off as me praising such con groups, but I think, in a bad way, that they are talented people doing this.

　I simply wonder why so many smart people get involved in crime. If they can do so many things, couldn’t they have thought of using their abilities in a better way? It may be a cliché to say, but isn’t it frustrating to be in a situation where you have abilities that are certainly superior to mine, but you can only use them to steal or cheat?
　Perhaps there are some people who take unbounded pleasure in the act of “deceiving others. They may be unable to get excited and exert themselves without the thrill of possibly getting caught. There may be those for whom “having fun and earning money is everything.” I am sure that there are many people out there whose hearts I have yet to meet and whose hearts are beyond my understanding. While I respect the diversity of human beings, I still think that the concept of “justice” should be shared more firmly throughout the world.

　I am sure someone will tease me for being “naive,” but I do not want a world in which “honesty makes fools of us all. I don’t mind if the “worldly” get some benefits, as long as they can be laughed off. Worldliness would be another ability. However, if a criminal act goes beyond the bounds of what is considered acceptable, a decisive response is required.
　Even with security software installed, I still receive a large number of spam e-mails every day for years. The fact that this situation is left unchecked makes me feel the strong danger that lurks in modern life. I am not so much troubled because I am still a little bit bright about the Internet, etc., but I am sure that the older generation does not know how to protect themselves. I would like to request the public to take immediate action.

　I wonder if AI is sending them to me randomly?
