新約聖書の福音書を読んでいて最近感じることは、イエスが生きた時代の様子が、太平洋戦争中の日本の社会と似た部分があるのではないかと言うこと。イエスの時代は律法の掟が絶対的に正しいとされ、律法に反していると見なされたイエスとその弟子たちの言動はユダヤ教の権力者からも一部の市民からも糾弾された。戦中の日本でも言論は統制され、国益に反する行動は国家権力から徹底的に排除された。一人一人の人権がない時代。どちらの時代も公の利益が優先され、権力者たちが実権を握り、そして命が失われていった。

　私はクリスチャンとして神さまを信じ、イエス・キリストの十字架による贖いにより私たちの犯した罪が赦されたことを信じ、信仰の道を生きようとしている。目に見える事実に基づく論理的な考え方とは一線を画し、極めて精神的な世界で生きることを目標としている。しかし福音書を、事実が記された歴史書として読もうとしたとき、イエスが現実の社会において、結果的に人権活動家の役目も果たしていたのではないかと思える。
　信仰があったからこそイエスが神の教えを宣べ伝え続けることができたことは承知している。それを分かっていなければ、私は洗礼を受けてはいない。イエス様の存在自体が信仰そのものなのだ。けれども、宗教的な心の話は少し置いておいて、イエスは人間にとって何が本当に大切で、大事にしなければならないこととは何かという問いを、民衆に投げかけた人だったという見方もできるのではないだろうか。それぞれの人生において閉塞感を感じている人たちに、実際に各々が行動することなくして、幸せが訪れることはないと説いたのではなかったか。聖書をそういう視点で読んだ時、キリスト教を信じない現代を生きる人々にとっても、生き方の参考に充分になる書物だと思う。そしてイエスは、その大切なものが目に見えない霊的な信仰や、愛であることを説いたのではないだろうか。

　世の中の常識に捕らわれたり、権力者からの命令に盲目的に従ったり、イエスはそういう拘束から人々を解き放ってくださったのだろう。律法を守ることがどうのこうのというよりも、「あなたは今幸せですか？あなた自身が幸せになるための生き方をしませんか」と、イエスが人々に提案してくださり、そのための道を示してくださった。そして自らの死と復活を以て、主なる神さまの正しさを証しされたのだと思う。

　キリスト教を考えるとき、自分の今の生活や経験と、聖書に書かれていることを照らし合わせながら考えるようにしている。神さまは目に見えないけれど、現実にこの世に生を与えられている私は、誰の目にも見えるものにも働きかけて、神さまの教えを広める使命があると思う。精神的な世界に閉じこもるのではなく、現実に生きるものとして、見えるものと見えないものを結びつけて行く。実際に行動して行くのだ。
　この日本という国では、昔よりは格段に人権が尊重されている。それだけでも私たちは恵まれた環境に住んでいると言えるだろう。しかし一部では人権が阻害されている現実もあり、海を渡れば差別に苦しむ人々はまだ多い。私の信仰がより深められ、キリスト教を広められるような働きがしたい。

Towards a Better World

　When I read the Gospels of the New Testament, I have recently been thinking that there are similarities between the society of Jesus’ time and that of Japan during the Pacific War. In Jesus’ time, the laws of the Torah were considered to be absolutely correct, and Jesus and his disciples, who were seen as going against the Torah, were denounced by both the authorities and some of the citizens of Judaism. During the war, speech was also controlled in Japan, and any actions that went against the national interest were thoroughly eliminated by the state power. This was a time when there were no human rights for each individual. In both of these times, the public interest was prioritized, the authorities held real power, and lives were lost.

　As a Christian, I believe in God and believe that our sins have been forgiven through the atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross, and I am trying to live my life in faith. I am trying to live in a very spiritual world, drawing a line between a logical way of thinking based on visible facts. However, when I try to read the Gospels as historical books that record facts, I think that Jesus was also playing the role of a human rights activist in real society.
　I know that it was because of his faith that Jesus was able to continue preaching God’s teachings. If I didn’t understand that, I wouldn’t have been baptized. Jesus’ very existence is faith itself. But putting aside the religious aspect of the story for a moment, I think it’s possible to see Jesus as someone who asked the people what was really important to them and what they should cherish. He taught that happiness would not come to those who felt trapped in their lives without actually taking action. When you read the Bible from this perspective, I think it is a book that can be a good reference for people living in the modern world who do not believe in Christianity. And I think Jesus taught that the important things are spiritual faith and love, which are invisible.

　Jesus freed people from such constraints, such as being caught up in the common sense of the world, or blindly following orders from those in power. Rather than focusing on whether or not you are keeping the law, Jesus suggested to people, “Are you happy now? Why not live in a way that makes you happy yourself?”, and showed them the way to do so. And I think he proved the righteousness of the Lord God with his own death and resurrection.

　When I think about Christianity, I try to compare what I am doing now and my experiences with what is written in the Bible. God is invisible, but He gives us life in this world. I think that I have a mission to spread God’s teachings by working on things that everyone can see. Rather than just staying in the spiritual world, I want to connect the visible and the invisible as someone who lives in the real world. I want to take action.
　In this country of Japan, human rights are much more respected than in the past. We can say that we live in a blessed environment. However, there are also parts of the world where human rights are being violated, and there are still many people who suffer discrimination if they cross the ocean. I want to work to deepen my faith and spread Christianity.

　I don’t like war.
